Raven's APM III

Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices (Third Edition) is a nonverbal cognitive assessment designed to measure abstract reasoning and fluid intelligence in adolescents and adults, particularly those in higher ability ranges.

Raven's APM III Model

The assessment presents a series of visual pattern‑completion problems in which individuals must identify relationships and select the missing piece that logically completes each matrix. Because it does not rely on language or prior knowledge, APM‑III provides a culturally fair way to evaluate problem‑solving ability, analytical thinking, and general cognitive capacity, making it widely used in education, professional assessment, and psychological research.

About the Raven's APM III

Background

The Ravens Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) III is a non-verbal assessment tool designed to measure abstract reasoning and problem-solving ability. It is based on the original work of John C. Raven, who developed the first version in the 1930s to assess general cognitive ability, often referred to as "fluid intelligence."

The APM III version is specifically tailored for higher-ability individuals and is widely recognised for its use in both educational and occupational settings. The test includes 23 questions and a time limit of 40 minutes

Uses

Organisations may include Ravens APM III in their talent acquisition process when recruiting for supervisory, managerial, technical and executive level roles.

Note: Raven’s APM-III should not be used as the sole basis for making an employment decision. For more information on best practices for using test scores in selection decisions, please consult the Raven’s APM-III–How to Use Results in Employment Selection, the Uniform Guidelines for Employee Selection Procedures, the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, or the Principles for the Validation and Use of Personnel Selection Procedures.
