Leadership Versatility Index (LVI)

The Leadership Versatility Index (LVI) is a 360-degree multi-rater feedback tool for senior leaders and executives. It evaluates how leaders' versatility is perceived by gathering feedback on two dimensions: "How you lead" ('Enabling' versus 'Forceful'), and "What you lead" ('Strategic' versus 'Operational').

APS is an authorised distributor for the LVI.

About the LVI

The Leadership Versatility Index (LVI) is best used for mid to senior level leaders, high‑potential talent, and leaders in complex or changing environments where success depends on balancing competing demands rather than relying on a single leadership style; it is particularly effective for those experiencing success plateaus, transitioning into broader roles, or receiving mixed feedback.

The LVI is most commonly applied in executive coaching, leadership development and 360‑feedback processes to build self‑awareness, highlight over‑ and under‑used behaviours, and translate insight into practical development actions; it is also used to support leadership transitions, strengthen leadership team effectiveness, inform succession planning, and enable organisational conversations about effective leadership culture by focusing on range, judgement, and situational adaptability rather than “right” or “wrong” styles.

Rating Scale

A distinctive element of the LVI is its patented Too Little / Just Right / Too Much rating scale. This scale records not only how often a behaviour occurs but whether its application is proportionate to the situation. That contrasts with traditional Likert scales that measure frequency or agreement without indicating whether a behaviour is being overused. The LVI scale therefore provides a different kind of information about behavioural balance and focus.

By distinguishing underuse, appropriate use, and overuse, the LVI produces feedback that is more precise and developmentally useful for senior leaders whose effectiveness depends on judgement, proportion, and adaptability. This framing can make behavioural feedback clearer and easier to interpret when considering leadership impact.

Research Perspective

The best leaders are versatile ones.

Two big challenges characterise leadership today:

  1. The need to juggle a growing series of paradoxical demands (do more with less).

  2. The Unprecedented pace of disruptive change.

These challenges have significantly amplified the need for versatile leaders who have the ability to cope with a variety of changes and the wherewithal to resolve competing priorities. It is not an overstatement to say that versatility is the most important component of leading effectively today.
